Para Karl Polanyi, o sistema econômico não é passível de ser analisado de maneira isolada das instituições sociais. A falácia do economicismo negligencia variáveis sociais que são fundamentais para a determinação
da ação econômica e das transformações sistêmicas. Isso implica que a ascensão do sistema de mercados autorregulados e sua dominância sobre as instituições sociais não são um movimento natural quando analisado à luz de toda a história das sociedades humanas. Para o autor, o que ocorreu foi uma espécie de desenraizamento da economia, embora este movimento tenha sido apoiado em um contexto institucional bastante específico no passado, e sem possibilidade de sustentação. Por ser a economia um subproduto das instituições sociais, a abordagem polanyiana entende que qualquer análise, seja da dinâmica econômica, seja de suas transformações, deve ser realizada tendo em conta as necessidades da sociedade como um todo.
