This review discusses Barbara Stallings's book "Dependency in the Twenty-First Century?: The Political Economy of China-Latin America Relations" (2020), which analyzes growing Chinese influence in Latin America, a region historically under the purview of the United States. The book assesses the relevance of dependency theory for understanding these new global dynamics. She revisits the theory from its Marxist and structuralist origins (1960s–1990s) and proposes three key mechanisms for its analysis: Markets, Leverage, and Linkage. The book assesses the relevance of dependency theory for understanding these new global dynamics.
