Abstract

Our aim is to test the postulate of “sub-imperialism”, formulated by Ruy Mauro Marini. According to his proposition, Brazilian industrialization was limited by growing demand scarcity. Nonetheless, its trend to deaccelerate would have been avoided by exporting to neighboring countries. It would represent a sort of imperialist offensive, though useful to the foreign multinationals operating in Brazil. Hence, a “sub-imperialist” exit strategy. We considered data of two countries where this postulate echoed: Brazil and South Africa. Focusing the automotive sector as a proxy of industry, we support that Marini’s proposition is not endorsed by the retrospect of external automotive trade.
