Abstract

The article describes some of the fundamental characteristics of what has been called "neoliberalism", with reference to its difference from the "new liberalism" (emphasis on social justice supported by redistributive mechanisms) and, at the same time, its rupture with classical liberalism. In this sense, "neoliberalism" is here thought of not as a mere ideology or a peculiar kind of economic policy, but as a new world-view, in the process of consolidation: for bringing together an original set of discursive apparatuses, normative principles, epistemological guidelines and practices of social conduct, neoliberalism represents a complex and multifaceted framework of forces whose main function is to spread the logic of competition for all dimensions of social life. A task of this magnitude can only be achieved by transforming and strengthening the power of the state, which must be capable of building an institutional framework capable of transforming and discipline man by adapting it to a social dynamic centered on self-regulating market-driven competition
