Abstract

This text analyzes some determinants that resulted in the election of Jair Bolsonaro as  president of the republic, as well as its meaning and reach in terms of the way in which he intends to lead the government in relation to the different demands of Brazilian society. For this, the first part draws attention to the increasing disaffection of segments of the population as regards  the inclusion policies of all kinds, income transfer policies for the poorest segments and the greater visibility of gender diversity, among other aspects, resulting in an explicit choice of meritocracy as opposed to solidarity and policies to reduce inequality, especially the access to education and income, and the defense of “traditional values”. In the second part of the paper, we analyze the new composition of the National Congress and  of the government, emphasizing the weakening of the traditional parties. The conclusions include the end of the New Republic and coalitional presidentialism, the increasing polarization of society and its representation in Congress, the advancement of retrograde patterns in the field of customs and education, as well as ultra-liberal proposals in the treatment of economy and social protection.
