O artigo procura, a partir de uma lista completa das referências (autores e obras) evidenciadas por Marx nos três primeiros capítulos d’O Capital, destacar o papel decisivo dos diversos autores que trataram de economia monetária, dos séculos XVII ao XIX, nas formulações de Marx sobre moeda, preços e mercadoria. Afirma-se que a “crítica à economia política” de Marx ergue-se sobre as formulações monetárias que estão na base da constituição da economia como ciência e dos debates monetários do século XIX.
