Abstract
Latin American structuralist theory is directly related to the Development Theory, sharing some crucial theoretical elements with it, such as the central role of structural heterogeneity, and distancing itself from the marginalist orthodoxy. Development Theory, in turn, fills the void left by the distance from the marginalist approach, resorting to theoretical and methodological aspects of Classical Political Economy. This work aims to retrace the connections between Latin American structuralism, Development Theory and the tradition of Classical Political Economy, emphasizing two main areas: theories of accumulation and theories of inflation. By reconstructing this connection, we show that Latin American structuralism represents an advance in relation to the marginalist approach, but that this theoretical vision presents analytical limitations which can be overcome by resorting to recent advances in heterodox theoretical formulations, and by incorporating elements of the modern surplus approach.
