Abstract

The article aims to analyze Gunnar Myrdal's view on the process of economic development and demonstrate that the reduction of social inequality is a central element for underdeveloped nations to achieve development. The core of Myrdal's argument in this respect is the principle of Circular Cumulative Causation (CCC). The inequalities he discussed are presented not only as a statistical analysis of per capita income levels but as gaps that form in issues related to social justice and in the range of institutions that emerge from there. The article concludes that: i) when compared to conventional theories, CCC presents itself as a more adequate tool to analyze the problems of underdevelopment; ii) the reduction of inequalities impacts on greater economic growth; iii) there must be state intervention in the economy through planning; iv) local institutions may widen inequalities and impact negatively to the process of economic development.
